Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
The USDA Animal Welfare Act and the NIH Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals require that institutions conducting research, teaching, or testing involving animals establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC is responsible for providing oversight and ensuring institutional compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies governing the ethical care and use of animals. At the 猎奇重口, the IACUC is supported by dedicated professionals within the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship.

- Review at least once every six months UM's program for humane care and use of animals, using the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals as a basis for evaluation.
- Inspect, at least once every six months, all of the animal facilities, including animal study areas/satellite facilities, using United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Regulations and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals as a basis for evaluation.
- Prepare reports of IACUC evaluations and submit the reports to the Institutional Official.
- Review and investigate legitimate concerns involving the care and use of animals at the research facility resulting from public complaints and from reports of non-compliance received from facility personnel or employees.
- Make recommendations to the Institutional Official regarding any aspect of the research facility's animal program, facilities or personnel training.
- Review and approve, require modifications in (to secure approval), or withhold approval of those components of proposed activities related to the care and use of animals.
- Review and approve, require modifications in (to secure approval), or withhold approval of proposed significant changes regarding the care and use of animals in ongoing activities.
- Suspend an activity involving animals when necessary; take corrective action and report to the funding agency, USDA, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)

IACUC Membership
Members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at the 猎奇重口 are appointed by the Vice President for Research and Creative Scholarship (ORCS). The committee comprises voting members that include:
- Attending Veterinarian with training or experience in laboratory animal science and medicine
- Non-affiliated members of the community
- Practicing scientists experienced in research involving animals
- Members whose primary interests are in a nonscientific area
