Our consultants are experienced writers and teachers who provide in-person and online writing instruction to UM community members. Moreso than specific skills or experiences, our ideal applicant will be curious, open-minded, compassionate, generous, inquisitive, flexible, and reliable. They will have strong inter-personal skills and be able to put students at ease. Our typical cycle is to interview and hire new consultants in the spring in preparation for the following academic year. New consultants participate in a multi-day orientation, usually in August, prior to working with students.
Consultants work 6-21 hours per week in daytime, evening, and weekend shifts during academic semesters and attend regular staff development meetings. We provide a substantial paid orientation to incoming consultants. The Writing Center reserves up to two consultant positions for currently enrolled graduate students. Compensation is $22 per hour.
Applicants must have completed a graduate degree or be currently enrolled in a graduate program, and must have excellent English language writing skills, and experience teaching, mentoring or tutoring. Applicants with diverse backgrounds and from diverse disciplines are encouraged to apply.
