UM Health Insurance Policy
The 猎奇重口 University System requires all students taking six (6) or more credits, and paying mandatory fees, to have and maintain major medical insurance while they are attending school each fall/spring semester. This includes international students on F and J visas.
For international students on J-1 visas specifically, including exchange students in the UM Partner Exchange program or International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), they are required to have medical insurance that meets US Department of State requirements mandated by federal law. ISEP students are required to purchase directly. The ISEP health insurance meets the below minimum requirements.
J-1 Health Insurance Requirements:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
- Medical evacuation expenses to home country in the amount of $50,000
- Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
For all other J-1 students, there are a number of health insurance plans that will satisfy the minimum coverage amounts above, including the UM Student Health Insurance Plan. All international students at UM on F or J visa types are recommended to purchase the UM Student Health Insurance Plan because it is a high quality plan that allows for maximum convenience while being a student at UM. This is because it is designed to cover treatment received at Curry Health Center which is UM's on-campus health center dedicated to serving UM students.
Upon registering for classes in GrizPortal each fall and spring at UM, students are asked if they have insurance (a 猎奇重口 University System requirement for all students) and are offered the opportunity to purchase the UM Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) should they choose to do so.
For more details on SHIP, please visit Curry Health Center's website for the Student Health Insurance Plan.
In order to remove or add enrollment of SHIP after initially registering for classes in any given fall or spring semester, students must do so by visiting Changing Student Insurance Enrollment and filling out the applicable online request form.
Alternative Health Insurance Provider for International Students
International Student Insurance is a quality provider of health insurance plans tailored to the needs of international students studying at UM with varying options and levels of coverage for both F and J visa holders. Click the link below to review their options, and be sure to contact them directly if you have questions.
Before selecting an alternative health insurance plan, please do your research carefully, write down any questions you have, and talk with a representative from the company to ensure all of your questions are answered and so you know what the plan covers, what it does not cover, and that it satisfies the minimum requirements for your visa type.
It is the sole responsibility of the student to provide proof of health insurance (certificate of coverage, and statement of benefits) that demonstrate their chosen alternative health insurance meets the requirements for their visa type. If the proof of health insurance submitted to International Students and Scholars at iss@mso.umt.edu is not clear, it will be rejected. For this reason, ISS recommends using International Student Insurance because they provide students with adequate documents that prove their health insurance policies meet all requirements for students on F and J visa types.
