Insurance Support Starts Here!

Health insurance can feel confusing. We’re here to make it easier. All UM students are required to have active health insurance while enrolled, and this page will help you understand the basics, important deadlines, and how to find the information you need across our insurance website.

Upload Your Insurance Card to the Patient Portal

Upload the information from your insurance card to the Patient Portal so that medical services received can be billed to your insurance plan. Remaining costs will be the patient's responsibility and will be available to pay in the Patient Portal under 'Statements.'

What You Need to Know

All UM students must have active health insurance each semester.

  • You can use your own insurance to satisfy this requirement or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

  • Our Medical Clinic now accepts health insurance for services. Counseling and Dental services are billed as flat fees to the Patient Portal.

  • International students may have additional requirements based on sponsorship.

Important Notes

  • Make any insurance changes before the 15th class day each semester.
  • Selecting SHIP when making your Insurance Selection does not activate immediate insurance coverage, your plan starts once you complete semester registration and finalize your tuition bill.
  • We can only discuss insurance with you, not your parents (due to HIPAA privacy laws), unless you submit a Release of Information (ROI) form.

How to Change your Insurance Selection

Insurance changes cannot be made in GrizPortal. 

Visit the ‘Change Student Insurance Election’ page for step-by-step instructions for both before and after the 15th class day.

Meeting the Health Insurance Requirement

All UM students must have active health insurance each semester. Here’s how you can meet this requirement:

  • Enroll in SHIP, full coverage for MUS students, including Medical Services.

  • Stay on a parent or guardian’s plan.

  • Use employer-sponsored insurance.

  • Purchase a private plan.

Note for students taking 1-5 credits:

If you previously had SHIP coverage, you may be able to continue it. Contact studentinsurance@mso.umt.edu for more information or to submit a petition.
