Individual Counseling |
Short-term therapy focused on goals, symptom reduction, and healthy change. May include referrals to other services. Session Limit & Frequency: Up to 6 sessions per semester, typically every other week. Cost: $20 per session (first session free; no cost with SHIP) |

Free counseling groups on topics based on student needs; builds skills; support, and community. Session Limit & Frequency: No session limit Cost: Free |
Urgent Counseling |
Same-day or next-day support for crises, worsening symptoms, or safety concerns. Session Limit & Frequency: Short-term stabilization; may lead to other services. Cost: $20 per session (first session free; no cost with SHIP) |

What to Expect From Counseling
Your First Appointment

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your first appointment. When you arrive, please check in at one of the computer kiosks.
If you are sick the day of your appointment, please call the front desk at 406-243-4712 to get rescheduled or for tele-counseling options.

Meet with your counselor to discuss the concerns that brought you to counseling.

Talk about your past and current life experiences.

Review your coping strategies and self-care skills.

Share your goals for counseling.

Answer relevant questions about your situation.
Confidentiality

Counseling sessions are private and confidential.

Your therapist will explain confidentiality at the start of your first session.
Next Steps

At the end of your session, you and your counselor will decide on potential next steps together.

Counseling is collaborative: your counselor will listen respectfully and support your unique concerns.
Changing Counselors

Tele-Counseling: Zoom or Phone
If you are located within the state and choose to do a virtual session over Zoom, your counselor will send you a zoom link to your student email. You can fill out the required paperwork prior to your appointment through the

If you choose to meet with your counselor over the phone, please go to the to fill out required paperwork prior to our appointment. Your counselor will call you from a number that may appear as "University" or "Restricted".
Urgent Appointments
If a student has urgent needs and cannot wait for a regular individual counseling appointment or an initial consultation, we can arrange a single-session appointment with the counselor available for urgent cases. These appointments are usually scheduled for the same day or, in some situations, the following day. To inquire about these appointments, please call 406-243-4712.
