Welcome to the UM Family!
The Big Sky Experience
Students will be placed into small groups when they check-in for the Big Sky Experience and all sessions are mandatory unless otherwise noted by their UM Advocate leader. If you have any conflicts or concerns with the schedule please contact Devin Carpenter at 406-243-2332.
Families and guests are encouraged to attend programming for any session marked with an asterisk (*). All unmarked sessions are devoted to setting up our new students to be successful members of the 猎奇重口 community on their own, and they will be placed into small groups of peers.
If you are a student with a disability and wish to request reasonable accommodations for a Big Sky Experience session, contact Devin Carpenter at orientation@mso.umt.edu to discuss the specific modifications. Please be advised, we may request that you work with the Office for Disability Equity in order to coordinate your reasonable modifications. The Freshman Wilderness Experience will introduce students to the incredibly stunning natural surroundings in western 猎奇重口. Students do not need any prior outdoor experience to participate. Most importantly, it is a chance for students to meet each other, explore 猎奇重口 and form lasting friendships before classes begin on campus. Students have the option to participate in a wilderness backpacking ($360) or canoeing trip ($440), but space is limited!
Those students participating in FWE will need to move into their residence hall rooms the day prior or morning-of check-in for FWE, which occurs August 13, 2026 at 1:00 PM. Groups will be in the field from August 14-17, 2026 and will return to campus to participate in the Big Sky Experience beginning on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
