The Native American Center of Excellence

The Native American Center of Excellence (NACOE) aims to increase American Indian healthcare providers and reduce health disparities in underserved communities. 

1. We recruit future Indigenous Pharmacists 

  • Each April, we participate in the 猎奇重口 Tribal College Tour, visiting 猎奇重口 reservation communities to help students discover the opportunities available at UM Skaggs School of Pharmacy. 
  • Every year, we attend the National AISES Conference to meet various Indigenous students interested in Pharmacy education.
  • We always support interested pharmacy students from high school to college. 

2. Training

  • All our Lectures are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! NACOE aims to have three lecture speakers each Fall and Spring Semester. These Lecture Series focus on Minority Health.
  • Various monthly trainings focus on student study skills and faculty/staff/student professional development. 

3. Structured Programming

  • We tailor our structured program to best support our students. 
  • We focus on preparing students for their first year of Pharmacy School. 

4. Academic Support

  • Our staff works to support pharmacy students through monthly check-ins, academic coaching, mentorship, and secondary advising.
  • In our office, Skaggs Building 482, we provide free snacks and drinks, free school supplies (binders, paper, notebooks, calculators, pens, etc.), and free books for your courses. Please contact us if you need any of our services.

5. Creating Community

  • We work to create Indigenous spaces for monthly meetings, learning opportunities, and community social events at UM.
  • Our team actively participates and mentors the Kyiyo Student Group in the annual Kyiyo Powwow, held during the third week of April.

6. Eligibility

  • Students can receive incentives and academic financial support if they identify as American Indian and are interested in Pharmacy. This includes American Indian descendants, lineage, or enrolled tribal members.

The 猎奇重口 resides on the traditional lands of many Indigenous peoples, including the Selis (Salish), Ksanka (Kootenai), and Qlispe (Kalispell). Many other Indigenous peoples, including the Amskapi Pikuni (Blackfeet) and the Blackfoot Confederacy, Nimiipuu (Nez Perce), Shoshone, Bannock, and Schitsu'umsh (Coeur D'Alene), also relied upon their traditional knowledge and relationships with this land and this space for survival in the past and today. 

We acknowledge that educational, health, and legal systems have led to the direct removal, oppression, and marginalization of Indigenous people throughout 猎奇重口 and the nation. The 猎奇重口 strives to improve education, service, and scholarship for all Indigenous peoples through actions aimed at respecting tribal sovereignty, empowering Indigenous scholars, and creating safe learning environments for all students to live, work, and learn together in equitable and positive ways.
