May 15-“Natural Materials in Craft and Art” with Dolly Browder
The use of natural materials such as wool and cotton fibers, clay, wood, leather, leaves, etc. begs the question, is this craft or art? How do definitions of craft and art intersect? We shall discuss the evolution of craft in contemporary art and how natural materials enhance or detract from the experience of art.
June 12-“Telling Tales: Stories Learned from Art” with Cay Drew
All art tells a narrative about the artist’s life and values while some art evokes a mood, theme, or concept. We will explore personal tales of loss, heritage, mystery, transitions, hope, etc., sometimes directly, but also through symbol and nuance.
June 26-“Beauty in Daily Life” with Jean Belangie-Nye
Many of the contemporary artists in the “19 Under 39” exhibition focus on and update traditional artforms. This tour focuses on a brief explanation of each craft and medium and its function and form, including historical, symbolic, and mythological connections to the everyday.
July 3-“Telling Tales: Stories Learned from Art” with Cay Drew
July 17-“Beauty in Daily Life” with Jean Belangie-Nye
July 24-“What is Contemporary Art?” with Len Maynard
Focusing on aspects of the MMAC Permanent Collection and the new “19 Under 39” exhibition, we shall explore traditional versus contemporary strategies for making art.
