Public entities include public universities, such as UM, law enforcement agencies and fire departments. If you are planning on using an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) for any of your research, you must obtain a Certificate of Authorization (COA) from the FAA. Per the FAA, the COA allows an operator to use a defined block of airspace and includes special safety provisions unique to the proposed operation. COAs usually are issued for a specific period – up to two years in many cases.
UM's COA
UM has a COA for up to 2,000 feet, and extended line of sight, in permitted airspace. University research and other public operations can be flown under this COA. Please contact us for more information.
