Dr. Katrina Mullan

Dr. Katrina Mullan brings expertise in environmental and development economics to UM’s IDS program. She recently led a major NSF-funded project in Brazil on how deforestation impacts climate, water, and farming, producing both scholarly publications and student-led research opportunities. Her work also extends to Uganda, where she examines reforestation and community livelihoods, and to Central America, where she has studied natural disaster impacts.

Currently, Mullan is investigating wildfire smoke and prescribed burning in 猎奇重口, bridging forestry, public health, and economics. She and her team are also developing new projects in Brazil focused on reforestation and farmer well-being. In the classroom, she challenges students to understand how institutions and global inequalities shape development outcomes. By pairing research with skills training, Mullan equips IDS students to engage critically with complex environmental and economic challenges worldwide.
