The Program Move form for HYPERLINK "https://umt.box.com/s/k6cj4uiuo6x0solob8i3f0zb11ly4wwn" Journalism will be reviewed by the Professional Schools Subcommittee. Members were reminded of the HYPERLINK "https://umt.box.com/s/drqx13v0jpb3eiswzho46hwqzdj9nzlw" Program Review assignments and Chair Broberg summarized the procedure. Members should review the documentation (self-study and external review). The subcommittee may wish to meet with the leadership of the unit to ask questions prior to drafting the review document for the Council. This can be shared with the unit leadership to ensure there is no misunderstanding and the needs of the unit are clear. Then the document is brought to the Council for approval. Subcommittees should try to have these completed prior to Bertha Morton Review. The Graduate School has received 22 at this point. Department materials are due two weeks after the applications. The Graduate School announcement will be sent to Committee members. Associate Dean Kinch did not know the balance available for scholarships. Dean McNulty, Associate Dean Patterson, and Geography Chair Shively were welcomed to the committee. Professor Shively provided a summary of the process that lead to Geography requesting the move from the College of Humanities and Sciences to Forestry. Geography had conversations with a number of unites to explore opportunities for efficiencies and synergies. The Geography Faculty voted last summer on the move to Forestry. There are already faculty serving on student committees. In August Forestry invited Geography to a retreat. The Forestry faculty are in favor of the move, but had some conditions. Geography was unable to meet its deficit through a staffing plan. Professor Shively was under the impression that Forestry could make up the reduction for Geography. However, Dean McNulty did not have this understanding. Members thought the deficit was the responsibility of the program not the College. This is a question for the Provost. Over time Geography hopes to expand and create interdisciplinary programs that are more flexible and recover its graduate program. Geography only has four faculty and will stay in the same location. Enrollment in GIS courses is consistent and is required for Forestry majors. GIS is a tool that can be used in many majors. Geography courses will still be available to other majors. Chair Broberg is aware of EVST graduate students not being able to get into Forestry courses (WBIO and a soils course). He and Associate Dean Patterson will meet to discuss. Dean McNulty asked what programs are doing that prohibits collaboration. Why is in necessary for a program to move to facilitate more collaboration? Business Items Graduate Council approved the move with the caveat that courses continue to be open to other majors. The Council would also like to know how the deficit will be addressed. The Council approved the policy appended for Public Administration. Students completing certificates often decide to pursue a masters degree. The Policy outlines the procedure. Associate Dean Kinch asked for input regarding TA orientation. Some of the training will be offered online. He would like there to be consistency across campus so the information can be incorporated into program materials. Good and Welfare There are three days remaining for students to apply for GradCon. Graduate Student enrollment for spring semester is up. The Council will not meet next week. Professor Renfret is participating in a panel discussion on the Government shut down next week at this time. The Graduate School new website will be published soon. The intention is for all the forms to be electronic and should now be available. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 12:52 p.m. Bertha Morton Announcement to Colleges The Graduate Council is pleased to announce its call for nominations for the 2019-2020 Bertha Morton Fellowships and Scholarships. For the coming year, each fellowship will carry an award of $5,000; each scholarship will carry an award of $3,000. Please encourage your graduate students to apply. Besides cash value, the awards honor your department as well as your students. The students have already received a call for applications and a reminder email. By virtue of the number of students in your graduate program, you are entitled to nominate MERGEFIELD Nominations 1 student(s) for a Bertha Morton award. The Bertha Morton Scholarship application process will be part of the ؿ general scholarship application. Kelly Speer, the Graduate Schools manger, will be available to faculty and graduate students if there are any questions or if anyone needs assistance. You can contact Kelly at 406-243-2701 or by e-mail at HYPERLINK "mailto:kelly.speer@umontana.edu" kelly.speer@umontana.edu. All graduate students have received an e-mail announcement of the Bertha Morton Scholarship and Fellowship with application instructions. You can view these instructions at: HYPERLINK "http://www.umt.edu/grad/Graduate%20Scholarships_Fellowships/Default.php" http://www.umt.edu/grad/Graduate%20Scholarships_Fellowships/Default.php. The institutional Bertha Morton Scholarship procedures are as follows: Students will submit their applications to the Graduate School through the electronic form at: HYPERLINK "http://www.umt.edu/finaid/scholarships/um-scholarship-portal/default.php" HYPERLINK "http://www.umt.edu/finaid/scholarships/um-scholarship-portal/default.php" http://www.umt.edu/finaid/scholarships/um-scholarship-portal/default.php by February 1st, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. Applications will consist of a personal statement and statement of accomplishments. The Graduate School will forward the applications to the respective departments via email by February 14th at 4:30 p.m. Departments will evaluate and choose their top nominees. Departments then must submit their nominations along with a nomination letter to the Graduate School ( HYPERLINK "Kelly.speer@umontana.edu" Kelly.speer@umontana.edu) via email by March 1st at 4:30 p.m. Following are the rules for the Bertha Morton Scholarship/Fellowship awards process: To be eligible for nomination, the student must have been admitted to a graduate program by March 2nd, 2019 and the student must be scheduled to enroll during the 2019-2020 academic year. The Graduate Council will evaluate and rank all nominations for scholarship or fellowship awards. Nomination documentation and recommendations should be based on the students academic record and accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: Honors and awards Professional certifications and credentials Evidence of research and other academic achievements Evidence of professional and community achievements Additional achievements and creative activities 3. A student who previously received a Bertha Morton award and seeks an additional nomination can only claim accomplishments not specified on the awarded application. Bertha Morton was a Helena, ؿ native who worked most of her adult life for the Internal Revenue Service in Helena. She was not an alumnus of The ؿ, nor did she actually attend any university. She worked hard and saved her money. When she died in 1977, she left a large part of her estate to the UM Foundation because she desired to encourage and help serious students obtain an education here. Bertha Morton fellowships and scholarships have subsequently become our most prestigious awards for graduate students. I urge you to continue this tradition and identify and nominate your most impressive candidates. Thank you. November 21, 2018 To: Graduate Council Re: PA, Nonprofit, or Public Policy Graduate Level Certificates Dear Dr. Broberg and Graduate Council, Many of the students that enroll in one of our graduate level certificates often decide to pursue our Master of Public Administration degree. As a result, the Master of Public Administration Program faculty would like to adopt the policy listed below. Students admitted into the public administration certificate, nonprofit certificate, or public policy graduate level certificates must maintain a 3.0. In the final semester of the certificate program, each student is required to complete the graduation form and submit to the MPA Director. In the students final semester of the certificate program, a student can contact the MPA Director to begin the MPA Program the following semester. The MPA Director will write a memo to the graduate college requesting that the student be granted full admission into the MPA Program and the certificate credits will be counted towards their MPA Degree. The student must have completed certificate coursework with a 3.2 or higher, GRE is not required. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Sara Rinfret, PhD MPA Director !+0137:>?JKLYZjv ( 3 F l Ŀ~wsh# h*hh SB*phhh S5hh S0J5 h`Hh S hglh S h*h S hh hglhh S h S6hhv56hvh]hhW;Kh!hyohM<hhvOJQJh hhv-!LZ Q $Ifgdw{ & F[$\$gd 9 & F[$\$gd} & Fgdv gd#gd!
