  • Air quality monitors to be installed at every 猎奇重口 high school for athlete safety By: Jonny Walker Posted 10:26 PM, Sep 10, 2024 and last updated 11:34 AM, Sep 11, 2024 HELENA 鈥 There鈥檚 a new way for 猎奇重口 schools to ensure outdoor activities are safe for students and staff on smoky fall days. A joint initiative between 猎奇重口鈥檚 Department of Environmental Quality and the 猎奇重口 Center for Population Health Research, the PurpleAirs In Schools Project aims to provide free air quality sensors to every 猎奇重口 high school. The sensors monitor 猎奇重口鈥檚 air pollutant of concern: particulate matter (PM 2.5). 鈥淏asically what it does is it reports the particulate matter concentration which can then be turned into an air quality index value,鈥 said Keri Nauman, a DEQ worker who oversees the distribution of the program鈥檚 smoke monitors. 鈥淎nd that air quality index value can be correlated to different health categories.鈥 Nauman said that schools equipped with realtime updates on their air quality can make better-informed decisions about holding outdoor practices and games. 鈥淏etween the years 2006 and 2018, 猎奇重口 experienced the highest percent mortalities due to smoke derived PM 2.5,鈥 said Nauman. 鈥淪o obviously, it鈥檚 a very serious threat to 猎奇重口ns, and anything we can do to mitigate that exposure is a win for us.鈥 Air quality data from each school鈥檚 outdoor sensor is compiled into an interactive map and made available to the public online. 鈥淚t just makes it more accurate,鈥 said Greta Buehler, the 猎奇重口 High School Association鈥檚 sports medicine liaison. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 easier for those small communities to determine what their air quality is and then make the right decision about whether they鈥檙e going to have practice, go inside, reschedule a game 鈥 anything like that.鈥 Copyright 2024 Scripps Media, Inc.
